Hutchinson YMCA Swim Club Team Structure
Competitive Swim Lesson Goal: Teach competitive swimming skills and inform families about
competitive swimming.
Competitive Swim Lessons Components:
I. Must be able to swim 25 yards of a stroke.
II. Participate in Inter-squad Meet when offered.
III. Two practices a week for 8 weeks three times a year.
IV. At completion have the option of trying out team free one day a week for 2 weeks.
Age Group Goal: Opportunity to pursue competitive swimming.
Age Group Requirements:
I. Must be able to try all 4 strokes. (25’s for 8 & U, 50’s for 9 and up.)
II. Minimum age is 5.
III. High School athletes may attend up to 5 evening practices a week. Athletes not in
High School may also attend up to 5 evening practices, but at the coach’s discretion,
may also attend up to 3 morning practices per week.
IV. Attend the Hutchinson swim meet at the YMCA and the Hutchinson swim meet at Splash.
1. Must wear a team cap at every meet they attend.
V. Participate in Fundraisers.
1. $100 per swimmer but $200 per family.
VI. Develop goals at the beginning of each season, including:
1. Desire to improve their swimming.
2. Attend at least two practices a week.
3. Strive toward Level and Division II and I cuts.
4. Having fun and enjoying swimming.
VII. Fee: $60
VIII. As HYSC grows this group will be broken down into Blue and Gold groups.
Senior Goal: Opportunity to pursue a dedicated swimming program in order to achieve a high
level of competitive swimming.
Senior Requirements:
I. Must be in High School.
II. Participate in Fundraisers.
1. $100 per swimmer but $200 per family.
III. Develop goals at the beginning of each season, discuss them in a conference with
the coach and a parent,and support choices consistent with stated goals.
1. Maintaining a 2.5 GPA is recommended.
2. Attend 75% of all offered practices. The 75% is evaluated monthly.
i. Morning practices MWF, 6-7 am.
ii. Evening practices M-F, 6-8 pm.
iii. Practices that are missed when a swimmer is injured or gone due to a swim
meet count toward the 75%.
(Coming to practice and kicking is recommended for injured athletes.)
iv. All other missed practices (evening or morning) do not count toward the 75%.
For example, practice missed due to sickness, being out of town, or not
being able to get to practice for some reason will not count toward the 75%.
3. Morning practices are mandatory for swimmers on the Senior team. However, three (3)
morning absences (only to be used for unforeseeable circumstances) will be allowed
per season (Sept-Mar) before weekend make-up practices are enforced.
4. Make up practices will be held on a Saturday or Sunday and last three (3) hours.
i. After the third missed morning practice, if a swimmer on the Senior team
misses another morning practice they must attend this make up practice.
ii. If they fail to make 75% of the practices during the month or foresee they
will not make the 75%, they have the option of attending this practice
to achieve the required 75% and remain in this group.
iii. This weekend practice will make up for two (2) missed evening practices or
one (1) missed morning practice.
iv. If they fail to achieve 75% of the practices by the end of the first week
after each evaluated month they will be moved back to the blue squad for a
period of time.
v. These practices will be supervised by parents of the Senior team athletes.
A signed note by the parent and working lifeguard(s) will be given to the
coach as proof of the completed workout.
vi. Unless a full body suit is worn, growing leg hair for at least one month and
shaving for Division 1, Zones, or Sectionals is required.
vii. A team, Zone, or All-Star cap must be worn at every meet and a team cap at
DII, DI, LII, LI, and Sectionals must be worn.
1. If a swimmer deliberately decides not to do Roman numerals IV or V they
will not be allowed back on the Senior team the next year.
viii. Open communication between the swimmer and the coach is critical because the
rigidity of these requirements can be overruled at the discretion of the
coach.
ix. Fee Structure will be implemented in September.
Relay Policy
1. Determined by attendance over the previous 2 weeks.
Explaination- Priority is given to the swimmer with the best
attendance over the previous 2 weeks before the meet.
2. Relay attendance is not effected by sickness or swim camps.
Explaination- If a swimmer was sick or away at a swim camp or
developmental clinic over the 2 week period before the meet the coach will
look to the two week period before they were sick or before they left.
3. Relay attendance is not effectd by the High school season.
Explaination- if a swimmer comes back to HYSC from the high school
and does not have a two week history at the time of their first meet,
priority is given to the fastest swimmer.
